ANGERME take a few minutes to put the disco in their discography with the throwback promotional video to the second of their double A-sides. “46 Okunen LOVE” puts Wada Ayaka’s girls in sparkling outfits, turns on a few lasers, and lets the CG work its magic. You can see the disco inspired set with a sparkling background and exposed speaker cones. But, man … sphinxes bobbing their heads, Hubble space telescope, and totem poles playing volleyball with the solar system? Not to mention the earth itself rotating like a mirror ball over center stage! If ANGERME didn’t have the verve to pull off this melange of imagery, you might call this a hot mess. Hell, you’ll probably still call this a hot mess, but “46 Okunen LOVE” is the best kind of hot mess: the kind of hot mess that puts the boogie in your bootie. The journey that started with “Yumemiru 15” ends with “Yumemita 15 (夢見た 15年)” and perhaps the most significant Hello! Project graduation since C-ute. Given the English title “Dreamed for 15 years”, the new ANGERME song fills itself with memories of the Hello! Project leader’s tenure in the projects. Lyrics by former S/mileage and ANGERME member Fukuda Kanon gets the sentiment just right intimately knowing Dawa’s voyage perhaps better than anyone else. Given an intimate setting that resembles an all-girls on deck slumber party, the promotional video feels like the end of an era. Ayaka reads through a letter alone in a white room, and is joined by the members as the room gains more and more color until it becomes the vibrant place that she help create. Dance shots put the ANGERME girls in white outfits reminiscent of the S/mileage / Ayaka debut and backs the group with the sparkling beaded curtains of that same promotional video. From a fan’s perspective, “Yumemita fifteen” hits all the right notes, and I suspect that more than one person was cutting onions whilst watching. “Koi wa accha accha / Yumemita fifteen”, the 26th single from ANGERME will graduate to record stores on April 10, 2019.

Graduating by the time you probably read this, Katsuta Rina gets her graduation single FINALLY. “Totteokino oshare wo shite (とっておきのオシャレをして)” will be available on ANGERME’s 27th single on November 20, 2019. The newest ANGERME single gets its promotion in full swing with the promotional video release of “It is me who constructs myself (Watashi wo Tsukuru no wa Watashi, 私を創るのは私)”. This PV is the first release without 2nd generation member Katsuta Rina and the first to feature new member Hashisako Rin. The Izutsu Himi/Kouga work continues the group’s penchant for intense songs. The insistent beat and manifesto lyrics give the group more sass (did they need more?). The girls of ANGERME dance through a laser filled gymnasium with a real sense that this is the beginning of a new ANGERME as it puts its younger members in front of the formation. Meanwhile, there’s some virtual B&E central to the plot of the PV that yields a nice “perhaps a bit too literal” shot of Hashisako Rin kicking down a virtual barrier so that she can join the ANGERME formation front and center. The second A-side from ANGERME’s latest gets a promotional video with the girls on a bed of flowers. “Zenzen Okiagarenai SUNDAY (全然起き上がれないSUNDAY)” features Tsunku pen marks on this subdued arrangement with tension stretched along its facade. The large formation of the group (3 new members in the last year!) get lavish sets with the girls dancing barefoot on a futuristic stage. But, you’re probably going to remember the dreamlike scenes of the girls luxuriating on the flowers. Is it a funeral scene, or is it an expression of femininity? Either way you decide it, ANGERME’s 27th single “Watashi wo Tsukuru no wa Watashi / Zenzen Okiagarenai Sunday” goes on sale November 20, 2019.

By the time you will have read this, Nakanishi Kana, the 2nd generation S/mileage member and ANGERME subleader will have graduated from her group and from the entertainment world. Just before leaving us, Kanana gifts us with “Tenshi no namida (天使の涙)”, a song written and composed by her former S/mileage and ANGERME groupmate Fukuda Kanon. I have much emotional attachment to Nakanishi, so it’s hard to write too objectively. I’ll just say that Kana has come such a long distance to where she is now. I also find it perfectly fitting that we get a song called Angel Tears to go along with the girl who named ANGERME from a combination of the French words for angel (ange) and tear (larme). Black and white images of Kana recording the vocal track and practicing the choreography to her swan song doesn’t really seem sufficient to me, but I’m glad we get at least this much.
